Knitpicks 10-Inch Wood Straight Needles (Radiant), A Tool Review

Image
Needles 3 in sizes, with Dishie in Blue.     These needles, made of laminated layers of birch, come in sizes ranging from 4 to 17 in this length, and are available in 2 other colorways known as Sunstruck (plain, uncolored birch) and Mosaic (pairs within the set varying in colorway). They can be bought as single pairs of needles or as a set of pairs ranging in size from 4 to 11 on the Knitpicks website. Additionally, they can be found in 14-inch lengths. Texture     Smooth to the touch but slightly more grippy than any metal needles I've had so far, I'd have to say these are a winner in this category. The assorted yarns I've tried on my set glide over the needles nicely, but don't slip too much. If you find some fibers or metal needles too slick for you, these might help keep your stitches neat and the yarn in control. Ultimately this can't take the place of actual practice and paying attention to why your stitching may be off, but no...

Red Heart Super Saver, A Yarn Review

Image
Assorted Red Heart Super Saver yarns in skeins, cakes and balls. Shown are solids, variegates and stripes.      A classic acrylic yarn for many fiber artists, the main line of Red Heart Super Saver has a vast selection of hues to choose from as well as a few more varied colorways. The solids come in 364 yard (333m) skeins, the prints, variegates, and stripes in 236 yard (215m) skeins, and the flecks and heathers in 260 yard (238m) skeins. This line also comes in a jumbo size, where the skeins are 744 yards (681m) in solids and 482 yards (440m) in variegates and heathers. This yarn is sold at various retailers as well as being available at Yarnspirations .com , since it's under their brand umbrella.      For reference, the yarns I'm reviewing here are what's on their website as under the line Red Heart Super Saver - the ombrés being listed as their own line. Texture    This definitely isn't the softest yarn, but I wouldn't call it coarse either. It...

Knit Face Scrubby

Image
Peaches and Cremé Original cotton with Red Heart Scrubby.     This pattern works up quickly, and should be doable for beginners once they're used to holding strands double and have adjusted to the string-like texture of scrubby yarn. If one wants softer exfoliation, substituting in more regular cotton for the scrubby yarn would work well. What you need: 10.5/6.50 mm knitting needles K10.5/6.50 mm crochet hook (L11/8.00mm recommended for binding off) 9 yards worsted-weight [4] yarn 9 yards scrubby yarn Stitch Key (US terminology): Knit Purl   Scrubby Two rows in. Holding both strands together, make a slipknot and crochet cast-on 10 with the first hook size. Row 1-2: Knit across. Row 3: Knit 2. Purl 2, knit 2 twice. Row 4-5: Knit 4, purl 2, knit 4. Eight rows in. Row 6: Knit 2. Purl 2, knit 2 twice. Row 7-14: Repeat rows 3-6 in that order, twice. Row 15-16: Knit across. Crochet cast off loosely. Larger hook may be useful here.

Peaches and Cremé Original, A Yarn Review

Image
Cake winders are handy for taking care of leftovers, once you work partly through a skein or cone.       Comprised of 100% cotton, Peaches and Creme Original is a worsted weight [4] yarn belonging under the Yarnspirations umbrella, additionally sold at Walmart and Joann's. It comes in a fair (albeit kind of small) range of colorways - solids and "ombrés" - in two sizes available for purchase. Regular skeins of solids and ombrés are 120 (109m) and 95 (86m) yards respectively, whereas the cones are 674 yards (616m) across the board.    Texture       While it isn't the softest, this yarn does have a nice cottony feel to it. It makes for good face scrubs, if you prefer a milder texture, and can be combined with scrubby yarns to tone them down a little. It's overall pleasant in my experience, to work with and feel on the finished product. It's not especially slippery, so I usually find it to be a good candidate for fringe as well. Flexibilit...
